Once the warm weather of spring and summer sets on the city, the Potomac and Anacostia rivers, which run through the District, glow brightly.
Fortunately for travellers, there are numerous ways to explore Washington, DC’s waterfronts, including family-friendly outdoor leisure such as being on the rivers and relaxing alongside them.
Live the Wharf life at Washington DC
When The Wharf opened in October 2017, Washington DC waterfront offerings skyrocketed. Awesome waterfront views, an array of fashionable restaurants, four separate piers, three new, state-of-the-art hotels, two terrific new concert venues in The Anthem and Pearl Street Warehouse, and a free water jitney that brings you to the magnificent East Potomac Park are just a few of the attractions.
Savor the outdoors at The Yards Park
The Yards Park, near Nationals Park and in the heart of the Capitol Riverfront district, sits resplendently alongside the Anacostia River. The park’s bridge is an architectural masterpiece, and its updated “outdoor chambers” make it a great area for kids to play. Ballpark Boathouse, a nearby waterfront outfitter, offers kayak rentals with views of the river’s animals.
Hang out at The Washington DC Harbour in Georgetown
Many restaurants, including Sequoia, Tony and Joe’s Seafood Place, and Farmers Fishers Bakers, offer patio seating in the summer, and there are lots of outdoor activities along Georgetown’s riverfront. Children (and adults) can splash in the sprinkler-style water fountain, watch the boats, and feed the ducks throughout the summer. Get some shopping done in the historic district before or after.
Head to the Key Bridge Boathouse for kayaking and paddleboarding
Key Bridge Boathouse, located on the Potomac River in Georgetown, is a terrific site to go for on-the-water excursions. Make the river your personal playground by renting a kayak, canoe, or even a standup paddleboard. Views of the beautiful Georgetown riverfront, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, and even the Washington Monument should be available. You can also kayak to Theodore Roosevelt Island, which is a separate attraction.
Have a monumental time with Tidal Basin Paddle Boats
Glide about the Tidal Basin in a pedal boat or a swan boat from Tidal Basin Paddle Boats, admiring the beautiful Jefferson Memorial and an abundance of cherry blossom trees. As you go through one of the most gorgeous regions in the District, you can expect to get beautiful views of the National Mall.

Hornblowers conducts daily sightseeing trips from their location on Southwest & The Wharf, affording spectacular views of the memorials and monuments from the water. Lunch and supper cruises, as well as themed excursions, are available aboard its boats, so you’ll have plenty of alternatives.
Potomac Riverboat Company, which offers a variety of narrated cruises on the river, including water taxi excursions; Potomac Paddle Pub, a rain-or-shine pedal boat that doubles as a BYOB booze cruise; and DC Cruises, which offers 100-passenger tour boats to see the monuments, as well as water taxi tours that connect Georgetown and Washington, D.C.; and Embark DC, which offers customized tours that depart from the Georgetown waterfront.
Discover dazzling views with DC Ducks]
On its unusual amphibious vehicles, the DC Ducks provide fantastic scenic trips. You begin at Union Station and go through the city, learning as you go about the city’s famous monuments and institutions. The car then transforms into a boat, transporting you directly into the Potomac River for an exciting off-road experience. This 90-minute ride is unlike any other in the District, and it’s a terrific pastime for the whole family.
