On the 13th of September 2021, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Tourism, Culture and DoNER, and Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma, Chief Minister of Assam addressed the inaugural session of a two-day conference of Tourism and Culture Ministers from the states of the North Eastern Region in Guwahati.
The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, hosted a two-day conference from 13th and 14th of September 2021, chaired by the Minister of Tourism, Culture, and DONER, to explore tourism growth and connectivity challenges in the North Eastern Region.
“Tourism can be a game changer that can bring socio-economic change in the nation especially in NE region. Rs 200 crore has been sanctioned under PRASHAD scheme for number of projects in the region” said Shri G. Kishan Reddy, Union Minister of Tourism, Culture and DoNER while addressing the inaugural session of a conference here today.
Shri G. Kishan Reddy, speaking at the forum, stated that the Ministry has sanctioned 16 projects in the North-Eastern region under the Swadesh Darshan Scheme, which focuses on the integrated development of theme-based tourist circuits.
He went on to say that his ministry is focusing on strengthening infrastructure, ground capacity, and skills in the Northeast. He added that the tourism ministry is also assisting the northeast region with branding and marketing through its different schemes and flagship initiatives.
Shri Reddy stated that the ministry has approved a number of projects in the region under the PRASHAD programs. These initiatives have been given a budget of around Rs 200 crore, he said.
Speaking about the initiatives under the DoNER ministry, the minister stated that the budget allocation to the North-Eastern states in the fiscal year 2021-22 is Rs 68,020 crore. He urged all of the region’s state governments to make realistic suggestions so that the entire budget allotted to various ministries can be used effectively.
Shri Himanta BiswaSarma, the Chief Minister of Assam, stated that a holistic approach is essential for the growth of the tourism sector in the Northeast. He went on to say that the North East as a whole has to be pushed and that connection and infrastructure facilities need to be improved.
In his remarks, Union Minister of State for Culture and Parliamentary Affairs Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal stated that tourism development is the central theme of the conference and that the North East has enormous potential in this area. In numerous industries, the North Eastern States have developed their own identities, and each State has its own talent and potential, he noted.

A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the Ministry of Tourism and the IRCTC for cooperation in the promotion of domestic tourism and the creation of new tourism products.
The meeting was attended by senior officials from several central ministries, state governments in the region, and industry leaders. The purpose of the conference was to inform attendees of the many programs and activities being undertaken by the Central Government to improve the northeast region.
