Manohar International Airport in Goa, which was recently built, opened today.
The first passenger flight arrived and departed from the Manohar International Airport during a function there. General (Ret.) V K Singh, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, participated electronically in the event.
Both Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant and Shripad Naik, the Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Tourism, were present. On December 11, 2022, Goa’s Manohar International Airport was opened by prime minister, Shri Narendra Modi.
General (Ret.) V K Singh, Union Minister of State for Civil Aviation, addressed the gathering remotely and expressed his gratitude to all parties concerned for the smooth start of operations at Manohar International Airport. He also mentioned how the new airport will significantly contribute to the State of Goa and the nation’s economic growth.
Speaking at the event, Shripad Naik, the Union Minister of State for Ports, Shipping and Waterways and Tourism, stated, “Today is a wonderful day for Goa and for the people of Goa and for me too.”
He used the occasion to reflect on how, during the late Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s stint as prime minister, he was given the responsibility of looking into Civil Aviation-related issues during his first term as a member of Parliament. “We began construction on this airport when Manohar Parrikar was the Chief Minister. Today, all of our aspirations have come true, said the Minister.
A new airport, according to Minister Shripad Naik, will boost tourism and help Goa establish itself as a centre for the export of perishable items like fruits, vegetables, and fish.
This would generate employment possibilities, boost villagers’ incomes, and draw tourists from all around India. The Minister noted that the Union government is concentrating on Goa’s development and that additional projects will soon be completed.
Goa has long been a well-liked vacation spot, but the Dabolim airport’s status as a military facility places restrictions on air traffic, according to Goa Chief Minister Dr Pramod Sawant. He stated that Goa would be connected to 18 new international and 30 new local destinations with the construction of the new airport.
In order to minimise inconveniences for visitors, he continued, regular taxi services are progressively becoming accessible. In the interim, the State government is deploying a fleet of electronic buses under the Kadamba Transport Corporation.
He said that because of the passenger-plus-cargo services that would be run out of the airport, Goa will grow to be one of the most fascinating cities on the subcontinent. He stated that the state administration has advanced in a favourable way with the recent lowering of the VAT on aviation fuel from 18 per cent to 8 per cent.
The Goa government is committed to providing unwavering assistance to all stakeholders in order to construct a fantastic success narrative for Goa in the tourism, logistics, aviation, and allied sectors, according to the Chief Minister.
Ex-post facto clearance was given by the Union Cabinet on Wednesday to rename Goa’s Greenfield International Airport Mopa as the “Manohar International Airport-Mopa, Goa” in honour of the late Manohar Parrikar, a former defence minister and four-term chief minister of Goa.
Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Union Minister of Civil Aviation, tweeted his happiness for the opening of Manohar International Airport. He said on Twitter that the start of operations and the reduction of the VAT on air turbine fuel will highlight Goa’s strategic significance as a gateway to India and create new opportunities for the state’s economy and jobs.
