CSMIA's Environment Initiatives Pave the way for a Greener Tomorrow
Solar panels strategically positioned on CSMIA’s rooftops generate around 5% of the airport’s total energy consumption.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has focused on launching numerous initiatives in areas such as education, health, environment, and women empowerment, motivated by sustainable growth achieved by creating a positive impact on Social, Environmental, and Economic aspects of society.

CSMIA celebrates the achievement of its environmental activities this World Environment Day, including the conversion of organic waste generated at the airport to organic compost, becoming a single-use plastic-free facility, afforestation projects, water conservation, and resource optimization.

Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA) has recycled garbage generated at the airport and transformed organic garbage into compost in order to reduce the environmental impact of its operations.

Environmental responsibility is an integral idea at CSMIA, and the airport devotes all of its resources to making tomorrow a greener and better place. As of April 2021, the airport had handled about 1172.4 MT of food waste and generated over 662.2 MT of compost since the launch of the Organic Waste Converter (OWC) unit in February 2016.

Furthermore, with the cooperation of all stakeholders, CSMIA became the first airport in India to achieve a 360-degree ban on single-use plastic within its grounds on October 2, 2019. In order to enhance its environmental goals, the airport has looked into installing PET bottle recycling facilities at its terminals to encourage plastic trash recycling.

CSMIA is dedicated to managing a sustainable and best-in-class facility around the world, with Environmental Management & Compliance as a top concern. CSMIA has adopted 3 acres of degraded forest land in Rabale, Maharashtra, and has been undertaking tree plantation efforts to revitalize the forest, in line with the worldwide aim of expanding green cover.

The CSMIA tree-planting program began in 2016-17 and has already resulted in the planting of around 1560 saplings in the 3 acres to transform the site into a much-needed green lung for the city, thanks to staff engagement. CSMIA also teamed with a local NGO to maintain and nurture the saplings on a monthly basis to guarantee that they are well cared for.

The planted seedlings have a 90 per cent survival rate, according to CSMIA’s continual monitoring of the activity. Through different programs for a greener future, CSMIA is actively involved in making deliberate efforts toward sustainable development.

CSMIA maintains its commitment to being a Carbon Neutral Airport by taking proactive measures such as earning ACA Level 3+ ‘Neutrality,’ the highest level of accreditation, prior to December 2020, which is valid until May 16, 2022. Recognizing the effects of climate change, CSMIA is attempting to align its operations with IPCC 1.5°C to 2°C pathways, with the goal of becoming a Net Zero airport in the near future.

Overall, the airport’s current measures have resulted in a 44 percent increase in renewable energy generation, and CSMIA continues to look for new ways to boost its reliance on green energy.

CSMIA has taken a number of efforts to reduce its freshwater usage, including continuous recycling and reuse of treated wastewater, rainwater collection, and drip irrigation, to mention a few.

Because it is located in the middle of one of the country’s busiest metro areas, CSMIA has always made an effort to reduce its influence on air quality levels as a result of operating activities by implementing a variety of initiatives.

The airport has two Continuous Ambient Air Quality Monitoring Stations (CAAQMS) that continuously monitor air quality. CSMIA also collaborates with its stakeholders and offers assistance in the development of techniques to decrease negative impacts on ambient air quality.

The CSMIA is also working on establishing an airport noise zone to create airport-specific noise rules that all aviation stakeholders must adhere to in order to decrease the airport’s impact on the surrounding area.
