Varanasi has emerged as a strong and distinctive tourism destination, with significant potential to be positioned as a global destination. Its unique blend of spiritual and cultural heritage, living traditions, iconic landmarks, vibrant ghats, rich culinary traditions and experiential tourism offerings provides a compelling proposition for international and domestic visitors. With continued focus on infrastructure, visitor experience, connectivity, branding, sustainability and development of high-quality tourism products, Varanasi has the potential to evolve into a globally recognized destination showcasing India’s rich cultural and spiritual heritage.
While significant progress has been made in strengthening tourism infrastructure and visitor facilities in Varanasi, the next phase of destination development requires greater emphasis on active community participation and capacity building. The local community, including hoteliers, homestay owners, Bed and Breakfast establishment owners, tourism facilitators, guides, street vendors and other tourism enterprises, plays a critical role in shaping the visitor experience and ensuring that the benefits of tourism reach the local population. This would require focused initiatives for tourism education, skill enhancement, service quality, digital literacy and adoption of modern technologies, enabling local tourism stakeholders to better respond to evolving visitor expectations. Strengthening these capabilities, while fostering greater community ownership of tourism, can help Varanasi develop a more inclusive, experiential, technology-enabled and sustainable tourism ecosystem, thereby enhancing both the quality of visitor experience and local livelihood opportunities.
Considering the above, the Ministry of Tourism organized a half-day workshop at Hotel Clarks, Varanasi for homestay owners, Bed & Breakfast establishment owners and members of the tourism trade. During the workshop, leading Online Travel Aggregators (OTAs), including MakeMyTrip, Agoda, ixigo, Airbnb and EaseMyTrip, made presentations and conducted knowledge-sharing sessions aimed at enhancing the capacities of tourism stakeholders in key areas such as operational management, guest hospitality, customer service, hygiene and safety standards, online review management and social media and digital promotion. The workshop sought to strengthen the professionalism and service standards of local tourism enterprises, thereby contributing to improved quality of tourism services and an enhanced visitor experience at the destination.
Shri Bhuvnesh Kumar, Secretary, Ministry of Tourism, stated on the occasion that the Hon’ble Prime Minister has emphasized the need to develop at least one globally competitive tourism destination in every State. Achieving this objective requires a holistic approach that addresses all aspects of the tourist journey—from the quality of infrastructure and visitor amenities to hospitality, service delivery, digital engagement, safety and the overall visitor experience. He stated that Varanasi is one of the country’s most important tourism destinations, attracting a large number of domestic as well as international visitors and possessing immense tourism potential to emerge as a globally recognised destination. Recognising the importance of strengthening the local tourism ecosystem, the Ministry of Tourism organised the workshop in Varanasi to enhance the skills, knowledge and professional capabilities of local tourism entrepreneurs and service providers. He emphasised that such capacity-building initiatives would enable tourism enterprises to adopt more professional business practices, improve service standards, make effective use of digital platforms and respond better to the evolving needs and expectations of tourists.
The participants also welcomed the initiative of the Ministry of Tourism and opined that such practical and industry-oriented initiatives would provide valuable knowledge, skills and exposure to tourism entrepreneurs, enabling them to adopt more professional practices and improve the quality of services offered to visitors.
