Thailand Announces Extension of Visa and Longer Stays

Thailand has recently unveiled a series of new visa measures aimed at boosting its economy through travel and tourism. These measures, which take effect from 15 July 2024, include a 60-day visa exemption, Visa on Arrival (VOA) schemes, the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV), and extended student visas. These initiatives are set to enhance Thailand’s appeal as a top travel destination, attracting more visitors from around the globe.

60-Day Visa Exemption: A Gateway for More Tourists

Thailand will now grant visa exemption for nationals of 93 countries and territories, up from the previous 57. This move allows visitors under this scheme to stay for tourism purposes and short-term business engagements for a period not exceeding 60 days, which can be further extended at the Immigration Office for another period not exceeding 30 days. Notably, the visa exemption for Indian nationals has been extended beyond November 2024 until further notice, enabling them to continue enjoying visa-free travel to Thailand.

Visa on Arrival (VOA) Schemes

The Visa on Arrival scheme remains an essential part of Thailand’s strategy to attract tourists. Visitors from eligible countries can obtain a visa upon arrival, making the entry process smoother and more convenient. This scheme is particularly beneficial for last-minute travellers and those who decide to visit Thailand spontaneously.

Introducing the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV)

In a bid to attract a diverse range of visitors, Thailand has launched the Destination Thailand Visa (DTV). This new visa measure targets remote workers, digital nomads, freelancers, and participants in various activities such as Muay Thai courses, Thai cooking classes, sports training, medical treatments, seminars, and music festivals. Spouses and dependent children of DTV holders are also eligible, making it a family-friendly option.

Eligibility and Benefits of the DTV

To qualify for the DTV, applicants must provide proof of funds or a guarantee of not less than 500,000 Baht for the duration of their stay. The visa fee is 10,000 Baht. DTV holders, along with their spouses and dependent children, are entitled to a five-year stay with multiple entries, allowing for cumulative stays not exceeding 180 days, which can be extended for another 180 days.

This visa offers an unprecedented level of flexibility and convenience for long-term visitors, allowing them to explore Thailand’s rich culture, natural beauty, and myriad opportunities while maintaining a base in the country.

Student Visa (Non-Immigrant ED Plus): A Boost for Education and Employment

Thailand is also enhancing its student visa policies with the introduction of the Non-Immigrant ED Plus visa. This new measure allows foreign students in higher education to extend their stay for one more year after graduation. During this extended period, graduates can seek employment, and if they secure a job, they can change their visa type to a Non-Immigrant B visa without having to leave Thailand.

Opportunities for Students and Graduates

This initiative not only makes Thailand a more attractive destination for international students but also contributes to the local economy by retaining skilled graduates who can fill job vacancies in various sectors. It underscores Thailand’s commitment to becoming a hub for education and professional development in the region.

Impact on Tourism and Economy

These new visa measures are expected to have a significant impact on Thailand’s tourism and economy. By simplifying visa procedures and extending stays, Thailand aims to attract a higher number of tourists, remote workers, students, and long-term visitors. This influx of visitors will boost local businesses, create jobs, and stimulate economic growth.

Strengthening Thailand’s Position as a Top Destination

Thailand’s strategic location, rich cultural heritage, and diverse attractions make it a preferred destination for travellers worldwide. With the introduction of these visa measures, Thailand is poised to strengthen its position as a leading destination for tourism, business, and education.
