Singapore Airlines Group and Aether Fuels Forge Strategic Partnership for Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Introduction: A Groundbreaking Memorandum of Understanding

The Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group recently announced a pivotal partnership with Aether Fuels through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) aimed at advancing the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF). This forward-thinking collaboration underscores the SIA Group’s unwavering commitment to sustainability and its goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. Through the procurement of SAF produced by Aether, the partnership sets a transformative benchmark in sustainable aviation practices.

Sourcing Neat SAF for Greener Skies

Under the terms of the MoU, the Singapore Airlines Group has committed to sourcing neat sustainable aviation fuel from Aether Fuels for five years, with an option to extend for an additional five years. This agreement will commence when Aether’s production plants in the United States and South East Asia achieve commercial-scale production.

To enhance fuel efficiency and compatibility, the neat SAF will be blended with conventional jet fuel before distribution to key airports served by Singapore Airlines and Scoot.

Innovative Production Methods with Aether Aurora™ Technology

One of the defining features of this collaboration is Aether’s groundbreaking production process. Using its proprietary Aether Aurora™ technology, the company employs waste carbon feedstock to produce SAF. This method offers several advantages:

  • Increased Production Efficiency: Higher SAF yields compared to traditional techniques.
  • Reduced Capital Costs: Lower setup costs for production facilities.
  • Environmental Impact: A significant reduction in greenhouse gas emissions.

By integrating this advanced technology, Aether Fuels addresses the critical challenges of scalable and economically viable SAF production.

SIA Group’s Commitment to Decarbonisation

Ms Lee Wen Fen, Chief Sustainability Officer, Singapore Airlines, said: “This partnership marks another step in the SIA Group’s journey towards our long-term decarbonisation goal of net zero carbon emissions by 2050. By collaborating with like-minded ecosystem partners such as Aether, we aim to accelerate and scale up the adoption of SAF in our flight operations, laying the groundwork for more sustainable air travel.”

Aether Fuels: Innovators Driving Sustainability

Founded and funded in 2022 by Xora—a deep tech venture firm backed by Temasek—Aether Fuels has rapidly positioned itself as a leader in climate technology. The company operates a research and development hub in Chicago while expanding its footprint in Southeast Asia.

Aether’s upcoming projects aim to produce CORSIA-certified SAF (Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation) that achieves a minimum 75% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions. These ambitious projects highlight Aether’s role as a catalyst for sustainable innovation in the aviation sector.

Key Leadership Perspectives

Mr Conor Madigan, Chief Executive Officer, Aether Fuels, said: “We are proud to join the SIA Group’s ecosystem of SAF technology innovators. Their decarbonisation goals are catalysing ingenuity throughout the supply chain and galvanising companies like Aether to develop production solutions that pair breakthrough technologies with next-generation feedstock strategies. The collaboration will deepen our understanding of the end-user customer priorities and of the SAF market, particularly in South East Asia. These advantages will further inform our project development programmes and accelerate our path to commercialisation.”

Mr Phil Inagaki, Managing Partner and Chief Investment Officer, Xora; Board Chair, Aether Fuels, said: “It is encouraging to see the SIA Group committing to meaningful sustainability goals and taking concrete steps to advance the adoption of SAF. Singapore has built a supportive environment for deep tech innovation, empowering companies like Aether to amplify the impact of transformative solutions to global challenges. Its Aurora™ breakthrough technology enables the production of SAF with the lowest green premium and most flexible, scalable feedstock. This collaboration with the SIA Group reflects a shared focus and commitment, making it a natural fit that will undoubtedly accelerate SAF innovation and adoption.”

The Future of Sustainable Aviation

This landmark agreement between the SIA Group and Aether Fuels signals a significant shift toward greener aviation practices. By harnessing cutting-edge technologies and fostering strategic partnerships, the aviation industry can reduce its environmental impact and pave the way for a more sustainable future.

The SIA Group’s proactive approach in embracing SAF not only sets a precedent for other airlines but also reinforces its leadership in sustainable aviation. As SAF production scales up and becomes more economically viable, collaborations like this will play a crucial role in achieving global decarbonisation goals.

Conclusion: A Milestone for Sustainability

The partnership between Singapore Airlines Group and Aether Fuels exemplifies the power of innovation and collaboration in addressing the aviation industry’s environmental challenges. With Aether’s advanced production technology and the SIA Group’s commitment to sustainability, this initiative is set to drive meaningful progress toward greener skies.

By fostering such alliances, the industry moves closer to achieving a future where air travel is both efficient and environmentally responsible.
