Moscow Partners with India's Leading Tour Operator for Tourism Expansion

Strategic Collaboration to Boost Moscow’s Tourism Appeal in India

Moscow, the vibrant capital of Russia, has recently taken a significant step toward strengthening its position in the global tourism landscape. In a groundbreaking agreement, the city signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Thomas Cook India Group, India’s largest tour operator in Mumbai. This strategic alliance is expected to pave the way for increased tourism exchanges and closer ties between Moscow and the Indian travel market.

Promoting Moscow as a Key Destination for Indian Travellers

The primary goal of this MoU is to position Moscow as an essential destination for both leisure and business tourism for Indian travellers. Recognizing the immense potential of the Indian market, Moscow aims to attract a diverse range of tourists by showcasing its unique cultural heritage, modern attractions, and excellent infrastructure for MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conferences, and Exhibitions) events.

Under the agreement, both parties will collaborate to:

  • Share knowledge and best practices in the tourism sector.
  • Increase awareness among Indian travel professionals about Moscow’s tourism offerings.
  • Develop customized travel packages tailored specifically to the preferences and expectations of Indian travellers.

Thomas Cook India Group’s Commitment to Moscow Tourism

Thomas Cook India Group, a prominent name in the travel industry, expressed strong interest in promoting Moscow as a top travel destination for its clients. A familiarization trip is already planned for this spring, aimed at providing firsthand insights into Moscow’s rich tourist offerings.

The Indian tour operator expressed interest in bringing its clients to Moscow this spring as part of a familiarization trip. The MoU was signed at the trade show, after we had agreed to organize a special presentation of Moscow as a tourist destination for Thomas Cook India Group and its clients, particularly in the MICE segment,” –said Evgeny Kozlov, First Deputy Head of the Office of the Mayor and the Government of Moscow, Chairman of the Moscow City Tourism Committee.

According to him, Thomas Cook India Group representatives expressed their interest in promoting Moscow in the Indian market at the Meet Global MICE Congress: BRICS Edition, which took place in Moscow in December 2024. “The Thomas Cook India Group team are big fans of Moscow, and are considered trendsetters in the Indian tourism industry,” Kozlov explained.

Partnership with Maharashtra Tourism

Further strengthening its presence in India, Moscow also signed an agreement with Maharashtra Tourism. This partnership aims to foster mutual development and promotion of tourism between Moscow and Mumbai, the financial capital of India.

The document underscores Maharashtra’s eagerness to encourage tourists from the state to explore Moscow. With Mumbai being a major hub for outbound travel, this collaboration is expected to facilitate significant growth in tourist flow between the two regions.

Showcasing Moscow

Key initiatives and major tourism projects presented by Moscow included:

  • Moscow Estates Project: Highlighting the city’s historic estates and architectural treasures.
  • Moscow Tea Time Project: Showcasing the rich culinary traditions and tea culture of the Russian capital.
  • Moscow Gastronomy Project: Promoting the city’s vibrant food scene and gastronomic experiences.

In addition to these presentations, Moscow representatives conducted approximately 500 business meetings with Indian travel professionals to explore potential collaborations and opportunities.

Rising Tourist Flow from India to Moscow

India has consistently ranked among Moscow’s top priority markets for inbound tourism. The number of Indian travellers visiting the Russian capital has been steadily increasing, with India regularly appearing among the top three non-CIS (Commonwealth of Independent States) countries for tourist arrivals.

In the first nine months of 2024 alone, more than 61,000 Indian tourists visited Moscow, nearly matching the total figure for the entire year of 2023. This trend underscores the growing popularity of Moscow as a preferred destination for Indian travellers seeking unique cultural, historical, and modern experiences.

Future Prospects and Expectations

The collaboration between Moscow and Thomas Cook India Group is expected to yield numerous benefits for both parties. By leveraging Thomas Cook’s extensive market reach and expertise, Moscow aims to attract more Indian tourists and strengthen its position as a top international travel destination.

Additionally, the ongoing partnerships with Maharashtra Tourism and other Indian stakeholders are likely to foster cultural exchanges and economic growth through increased tourism.

As Moscow continues to invest in enhancing its tourism infrastructure and offerings, Indian travellers can look forward to a diverse range of experiences, from exploring iconic landmarks like the Kremlin and Red Square to enjoying world-class dining, shopping, and entertainment options.
