In a first across Indian airports, CSMIA introduces ‘Integrated Security Check Point’ for domestic and international passengers

Mumbai’s Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSMIA), which is driven to set new benchmarks through technology interventions, once again breaks the mould by introducing ground-breaking innovations, this time with the launch of an “Integrated Security Check Point” at Terminal 2. (T2).

This innovative integrated security checkpoint would see all international and domestic passengers exiting through T2, receiving common security clearance at Level 04, and moving towards the designated e-gates for the first time across any of the Indian airports. Then, each departing passenger makes their way to the appropriate “Security Holding Area” (SHA).

In order to improve travel convenience, CSMIA has continually worked to implement solution-driven processes across all airport operations.

The integrated security checkpoint establishes a precedent in the Indian aviation industry and is a testament to CSMIA’s future-ready approach to airport management.

The particular problems that arise at the airport on a regular basis demand solutions that not only take care of the immediate problem but also seamlessly incorporate an improved transit experience for the passengers.

In this regard, the CSMIA saw an opportunity to further streamline the security check-in procedure for both international and domestic passengers by bringing them together for security checks at a single security checkpoint for the first time.

At Level 3 and Level 4 of Terminal 2, respectively, security checks for both domestic and foreign passengers were previously conducted.

After integration, both domestic and foreign travellers will now pass through any one set of e-gates placed at 05 distinct locations in the pre-security check area, and they will be separated by validation at a different set of e-gates placed after the security check.

Through the implementation of revolutionary initiatives that promote better passenger flow and movements, the CSMIA has the chance to demonstrate the operational efficiency that might be brought to airports as a result.

At the new Integrated Security Check Point, the CSMIA has also deployed and installed the Automatic Tray Retrieval System (ATRS), with a focus on integrating newer technologies to further improve passenger throughputs. 13 ATRS-based roller and sensor devices have been installed by CSMIA, and they are programmed to return luggage trays to the starting location once passengers have collected their items.

The retrieval systems can move 350 sanitised trays on average each hour, which not only speeds up the process of checking out passenger bags but also gets rid of any manual assistance from the customer or the personnel.

Because ATRS would enable continuous cycling of the available trays, it would also eliminate the inconvenience of passengers waiting and circling for trays, improving the overall efficiency of the integrated security procedure.

Additionally, 280 passengers per hour on average can now be cleared for security thanks to this technology, up from 130 passengers per hour on average under the old system.

For the ease of travellers leaving the terminal, ATRS is also being installed and deployed at Terminal 1.

Because of the increased throughput, the traveller will now travel through T2 more leisurely and be able to spend more time in the Security Hold Area (SHA) before boarding the aircraft.

The increasing popularity of air travel among Indians and the post-covid surge in traffic seen at CSMIA further motivate the airport to keep developing solutions for the customers who demand high service standards throughout their entire transit through the airport.

The launch of ground-breaking projects at the airport is made possible by the extraordinary infrastructural capabilities at CSMIA, which have been enhanced significantly by the installation of the Integrated security checkpoint. CSMIA strives to continue leading innovation and driving change within the Indian aviation sector in a way that responds to every demand of passengers and industry alike, keeping the vision of Gateway to Goodness alive.
