Recently, the Directorate of Tourism Jammu and Kashmir organized a remarkable celebration of World Environment Day at the Tourist Reception Centre Basohli, marking yet another step towards its transformation into a thriving hub for tourism.

World Environment Day: Promoting Sustainability in Basohli

As part of its continuous efforts to raise awareness about environmental conservation, the Department of Tourism celebrated World Environment Day at the Tourist Reception Centre Basohli. The day-long festivities commenced with an inspiring ‘Eco-Tourism Awareness Rally’ led by local school children, aligning with this year’s theme of “Beat Plastic Pollution.” The rally, supported by the official campaign hashtag #beatplasticpollution, started at the iconic Atal Setu Bridge and concluded at TRC Basohli. The initiative aimed to educate both locals and visitors about the importance of preserving the environment.

Promoting Local Crafts and Artistry

During the World Environment Day celebrations, Secretary to the Government, Tourism Department, J-K, Syed Abid Rasheed Shah (IAS), and DDC Chairman Kathua Col. Mahan Singh inaugurated a ‘Plantation Drive’ to emphasize the significance of green practices. Additionally, visitors had the opportunity to explore the Departmental Stalls showcasing exquisite local Handloom and Handicraft products, which embodied the theme “Humari Kala Humari Pehchann” (Our Art, Our Identity). The event also featured a captivating Basohli Painting exhibition, captivating the audience with its rich cultural heritage. Furthermore, the Department of Handloom, J-K, mesmerized attendees with a live demonstration of traditional charkha spinning.

In his address, Syed Abid Rasheed Shah expressed the Tourism Department’s unwavering commitment to promoting Basohli as a premier tourist destination in Jammu and Kashmir. The department aims to position Basohli prominently on the global tourist map, supported by state-of-the-art facilities and infrastructure. To achieve this vision, critical areas requiring attention will be prioritized, with initiatives falling under the ‘Swadesh Darshan’ and other similar schemes of the Union Tourism Ministry. The secretary urged all stakeholders to unite their efforts, forging a collaborative path towards elevating Basohli to unprecedented heights.
