Assam grants Industry Status to Tourism Sector in the state

The Assam State Cabinet, chaired by Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma, approved the application for the provision of Industrial status to the tourist sector in Assam on Monday since the expansion of the sector is essential for socio-economic development in the state.

Shri Jayanta Mallabaruah, the tourism minister for Assam, emphasized that given the current state of the industry, new investments in long-term infrastructure will hasten the creation of jobs, the formation of public-private partnerships, and the improvement of physical infrastructure.

Restaurants, cafeterias, health clubs, spas, and wellness centers among others are now eligible for subsidies under the industrial strategy as a result of the tourism industry being given industry status. This action will further support and stimulate private investment in the aforementioned tourism-related industries.

“Earlier, the tourism sector was not under State Industrial Policy. This decision will bring a paradigm shift to the tourism sector. Previously only hotels and resorts above the three-star category and River Cruises were included under thrust areas of Assam Industrial Policy. But, now many new tourism units like heritage hotels, bungalows, camping sites, restaurants, amusement parks, ropeways, museums, tour operator service, adventure park, water sports etc will also be included in the thrust areas of the industrial policy,” Mallabaruah told reporters here.

Along with capital production and the provision of meaningful employment, the recently approved policy aims for ecologically responsible and sustainable investment. The ministry also stated that the region’s overall development might be aided by the development of the infrastructure through Public Private Partnership (PPP) models.

“Assam tourism sector will receive an ample number of private investments due to the new status received which facilitates incentives, subsidies, reimbursements among others as per industry policy for the investors and eventually these investments will create new employment opportunities,” he added

Because of its distinctive fauna, biodiversity, and experience of an undiscovered wonderland, Assam has already established itself as a highly regarded national and international all-season tourist destination. Over time, one of the primary means of generating cash for the populace will be tourism.
