Mr. Manoj Singh, Country Head – India, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL)

India’s outbound travel market is undergoing a significant transformation, with cruise holidays emerging as an increasingly popular choice among affluent and experience-driven travellers. As Indian consumers become more discerning and seek seamless, premium and multi-destination holidays, cruising is evolving from a once-in-a-lifetime aspiration into a repeatable vacation format. In this conversation, Mr. Manoj Singh, Country Head – India, Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) shares his perspective on the rapid growth of India’s cruise market, the changing preferences of Indian travellers, the growing popularity of fly-cruise holidays, the role of travel trade, and Norwegian Cruise Line’s plans for the Indian market. From multigenerational family travel and Freestyle Cruising to new itineraries across Asia, Europe and Alaska, he discusses how the cruise experience is adapting to the evolving Indian traveller.

India is emerging as one of the fastest-growing outbound travel markets, with cruise holidays gaining significant momentum. From Norwegian Cruise Line’s perspective, what is driving this shift, and how important is the Indian market to your long-term growth strategy?

Yes. High-income urban Indians are increasingly choosing international cruise vacations, pushing up India’s overall outbound travel numbers. Today, more travellers are aware of the benefits of a cruise holiday – value, convenience, meaningful experiences and the joy of unpacking just once yet waking up to a new destination each day – and are planning their international itineraries months. India is also a market where families often travel together across generations, and that is exactly where NCL’s strength lies: our ships offer enough variety and freedom for every family member, from grandparents to kids, to enjoy the holiday in their own way, without anyone having to compromise on their experience. That is what makes India such an important and fast-growing market for us.

Indian travellers today are increasingly seeking premium, experience-led holidays. How have you seen traveller preferences evolve over the past few years, and what trends are shaping cruise demand from India?

NCL cruises are known for offering exclusive, meaningful yet premium travel experiences that give guests the freedom to enjoy their holiday at their own pace. Our long-standing philosophy of no fixed dining times or dress codes resonates well with different age groups, as do our diverse accommodation choices, unique on-board dining and entertainment offerings, and destination-rich itineraries that give them some of the most memorable experiences of their lives. From being considered an aspirational once-in-a-lifetime bucket-list wish, global cruises today have become preferred, repeatable holiday formats, reflecting the evolved mindset of a far more discerning, aware Indian consumer.

Despite rising international airfares and changing travel patterns, outbound cruise demand continues to grow. What factors have helped the cruise segment remain resilient?

More urban Indians are spending their disposable incomes on experiencing the world through travel than on material goods. A cruise vacation ticks off the checklist of an aspirational international holiday. Unlike land holidays that require multiple bookings for flights, hotels and experiences, a global cruise includes the convenience and value of visas, accommodation, dining, entertainment, and multiple destinations in one booking. NCL’s ‘Free at Sea’ package adds even more value to your booking by bundling drinks, speciality dining, Wi-Fi, and shore excursions.

Fly-cruise holidays are becoming increasingly popular among Indian travellers. Which destinations and itineraries are currently seeing the strongest demand, and are there any emerging routes that you believe have strong potential?

Yes, Indian travellers have popularised the convenient fly-cruise connections from our primary gateway cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Bengaluru, and Chennai to the embarkation ports of their NCL cruise. Our fleet of 20 ships sails to nearly 450 destinations worldwide, and at present, the Mediterranean and Northern Europe, as well as Alaska, remain the most popular destinations for Indians. We’re also seeing Asia emerge as a culturally rich, closer-to-home option gaining strong traction. For travellers looking for a shorter getaway, our 3– to 4-day Bahamas sailings pair well with a few extra days in the embarkation city – think theme parks in Orlando or a stay in Miami – before or after the cruise. All of these itineraries call at our private island, Great Stirrup Cay, which now features the Great Life Lagoon pool area, the adults-only Vibe Shore Club, and the soon-to-open Great Tides Waterpark, making it a destination the whole family can enjoy together.

Norwegian Cruise Line pioneered the concept of Freestyle Cruising. How does this philosophy appeal to today’s Indian traveller, and what sets it apart from a traditional cruise vacation?

Delivering each guest with the freedom and flexibility to create their individual holiday experience and enjoy it at his/her own pace is the backbone of the NCL’s brand promise, which is why multigenerational Indian families and large groups of friends love it! While travelling with company, each person has the freedom to enjoy the experience with no fixed dining times, dress codes, or rigid schedules. This empowers guests with the choice to decide how they want to spend their vacation – with their loved ones at any of the restaurants, multiple entertainment options, and activity zones together, or sitting by the deck with a book and their favourite drink alone!

Travel Trade continues to play a major role in growing the cruise market. How is Norwegian Cruise Line working with travel partners, particularly in Tier II and Tier III cities, to increase cruise awareness and bookings?

Our travel partners remain central to our growth strategy in India, and we remain committed to investing in several initiatives that empower them with everything they need.

The Norwegian Central provides training through NCL University, while our Book-A-BDM initiative links travel advisers with our local Business Development Managers.

We are collaborating closely with our travel partners in India and providing them with the necessary support to further increase cruise awareness through our various marketing strategies while also encouraging more Indian tourists to explore their favourite destinations across the world with an NCL cruise.

Sustainability is becoming a key consideration across the tourism industry. Could you share some of Norwegian Cruise Line’s recent sustainability initiatives and how they contribute to delivering a more responsible cruise experience?

We remain committed to continuing to invest in green initiatives that help reduce the environmental impact of our fleet while elevating the visitor experience. We have deployed fuel-efficient technologies, advanced wastewater treatment systems, waste reduction programmes and reduced single-use plastics across the fleet. Our goal is to provide memorable cruise experiences to our guests in a more responsible manner, even as we continue to innovate on new sustainable initiatives. And lastly, looking ahead, what can the Indian travel trade and travellers expect from Norwegian Cruise Line over the next 12–24 months? Are there any new partnerships, initiatives, or developments that you can share?

Indian travellers have a great deal to look forward to. They can now plan and book their cruise to key destinations across Europe, Alaska, and Asia right through Summer 2028, so those who book early get the widest choice of itineraries, preferred staterooms, and the best value on offers and promotions.

Norwegian Jade returns to Asia for the first time since 2019 with a seven-month season from October 2026 through April 2027, sailing from homeports including Incheon, Hong Kong, Singapore, and Tokyo. Our Alaska programme continues to expand too, with multiple ships and convenient weekend departures giving guests more flexibility on when to sail.

We’re also excited about the upcoming launch of Norwegian Aura, our newest and largest ship yet, which debuts with a seven-day Mediterranean sailing from Trieste to Barcelona in May 2027, before repositioning to homeport in Miami for her Caribbean season from June 2027.

Combined with our diverse itineraries across Europe, Alaska, and Asia, we continue to deliver innovative, adaptable cruise holidays through closer engagement with our travel partners here in India.
