Redefining Coastal Luxury: Mr. Anand Nair on Transforming InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort into a World-Class Destination

With over three decades of experience in the luxury hospitality industry, Mr. Anand Nair has built a reputation for visionary leadership, people-centric management and delivering exceptional guest experiences. As the General Manager of InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort, he has spearheaded a remarkable multi-million-dollar transformation of the resort, seamlessly blending contemporary luxury with the timeless cultural heritage of Mahabalipuram. Under his leadership, the resort continues to set new benchmarks in personalised hospitality, wellness, sustainability and destination-driven experiences.

In this exclusive interview, Mr. Anand Nair, General Manager, InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort shares the vision behind the resort’s transformation, discusses the evolving expectations of luxury travellers, highlights the importance of authentic cultural experiences, and offers insights into the future of luxury hospitality in India.

InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort has undergone a remarkable transformation under your leadership. What was your vision behind the resort’s multi-million-dollar renovation, and how has it redefined the guest experience?

When we embarked on this transformation, my vision was simple—to elevate every aspect of the guest experience while staying true to the soul of the resort. We didn’t want to merely renovate spaces; we wanted to create an environment where every stay feels more intuitive, comfortable and memorable.

The redesign focused on blending contemporary luxury with the timeless beauty of our coastal setting and the architectural influences of Mahabalipuram. From our redesigned guestrooms and suites to refreshed dining destinations, enhanced wellness facilities and upgraded event spaces, every detail has been thoughtfully considered.

For me, luxury is about how a guest feels rather than what they see. Today’s travellers appreciate authenticity, personalization and seamless service, and this transformation enables us to deliver exactly that while continuing to uphold the globally recognised standards of the InterContinental brand.

With more than three decades in luxury hospitality, how have guest expectations evolved over the years, and what strategies do you believe are essential for luxury resorts to remain relevant in today’s competitive market?

Guest expectations have evolved significantly over the years. Luxury today is no longer defined by extravagance alone—it is about personalization, authenticity and creating experiences that resonate on a deeper level.

Modern travellers are incredibly well-informed and value meaningful interactions, flexibility and genuine hospitality. They seek destinations that offer a sense of place rather than just accommodation.

To remain relevant, luxury resorts must continue to innovate without losing their essence. Technology should simplify the guest journey, sustainability should become an integral part of operations, and service should remain genuinely human. I believe listening to our guests, empowering our teams, and constantly evolving are the keys to staying ahead in an increasingly competitive landscape.

The resort draws inspiration from the UNESCO World Heritage site of Mahabalipuram. How do you integrate the destination’s rich cultural heritage into the overall guest journey while maintaining the global standards of the InterContinental brand?

Mahabalipuram is one of India’s most remarkable cultural destinations, and we consider it a privilege to be located so close to this UNESCO World Heritage site.

We aim to ensure guests experience not just the destination, but its stories. The resort’s design reflects elements inspired by Pallava architecture, while our culinary experiences celebrate regional flavours using local ingredients. We also encourage guests to explore nearby heritage sites and discover the region’s rich history and craftsmanship.

At the same time, every experience is delivered with the consistency, sophistication and service excellence that guests expect from InterContinental. It is this balance between local authenticity and international luxury that makes the guest journey truly distinctive.

Luxury travellers today are increasingly seeking wellness, authentic experiences and meaningful connections with destinations. How is InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort catering to these evolving preferences?

We have seen a clear shift towards more purposeful travel. Guests want to relax, reconnect and return home with meaningful memories rather than simply ticking destinations off a list.

Our wellness offerings extend beyond traditional spa experiences to include spaces that encourage mindfulness, fitness and relaxation. At the same time, we curate experiences that immerse guests in the local culture, whether through regional cuisine, cultural discoveries or personalised itineraries around Mahabalipuram.

Being located along the Bay of Bengal also allows guests to embrace nature and enjoy a slower pace of travel. We strive to create experiences that are enriching, restorative and deeply connected to the destination.

As a leader known for your people-first approach, how do you foster a culture of excellence and innovation among your team while ensuring consistently exceptional guest service?

Hospitality has always been about people. I firmly believe that if you genuinely care for your team, they will naturally care for your guests.

Creating a culture of excellence starts with trust, open communication and continuous learning. I encourage my team to share ideas, take ownership and constantly look for ways to improve the guest experience. Innovation doesn’t always come from major changes—it often comes from small, thoughtful improvements suggested by the people who interact with guests every day.

Recognition is equally important. Celebrating successes and investing in our people’s development builds confidence, motivation and pride. When employees feel valued, they deliver authentic hospitality that guests remember long after they leave.

Looking ahead, what are your key priorities for InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort, and how do you envision the property contributing to the continued growth of luxury tourism in Tamil Nadu and India?

Our immediate priority is to further strengthen our position as one of South India’s leading luxury resort destinations. We will continue investing in exceptional guest experiences, innovative dining concepts, wellness offerings and personalised service that reflects the evolving expectations of luxury travellers.

Beyond the resort, I believe we have an important role in showcasing the cultural richness and natural beauty of Mahabalipuram to both domestic and international visitors. By creating meaningful collaborations with local communities, promoting responsible tourism and delivering true hospitality, we can contribute to the continued growth of Tamil Nadu as a premier luxury travel destination.

The future of luxury hospitality lies in creating experiences that are authentic, sustainable and memorable. That is the direction we will continue to pursue at InterContinental Chennai Mahabalipuram Resort.
