Wedding tourism can add $1 trillion to Indian economy, says Tourism Minister at PHDCCI’s 1st Wedding Tourism Summit & Expo

The wedding industry in India has always been known for its lavish ceremonies, cultural diversity, and vibrant celebrations. As of 2024, wedding tourism has taken centre stage as one of India’s most promising economic growth drivers. During his address at PHDCCI’s 1st Wedding Tourism Summit & Expo, Shri Gajendra Singh Shekhawat, Hon’ble Minister of Tourism and Culture emphasized the immense potential wedding tourism holds for the country’s economic future.

According to the Hon’ble Minister, the initiatives led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi have enabled around 25-30 crore people to move from poverty into the middle class. With 54% of the population under 30 years of age, a substantial household income is spent on weddings. The Minister pointed out that 68 crore Indians under 25 years old will soon enter the marriageable age, which presents a significant opportunity for the wedding industry in India.

India’s Wedding Industry: A Powerhouse for Economic Growth

India’s wedding industry, valued at $50 billion, has been growing at an impressive rate of 20-25% annually. The trend of destination weddings—where couples combine tourism and celebrations—has seen exponential growth, especially in popular wedding destinations like Rajasthan, Goa, and Kerala. The increasing demand for these unique experiences is not only boosting the hospitality and travel sectors but also fostering growth across auxiliary industries such as event management, catering, and floristry.

Shri Hemant Jain, President, PHDCCI highlighted that India, with its rich diversity of landscapes, cultures, and historic venues has long been a dream wedding destination. The grandeur of Indian weddings, combined with the rising trend of destination weddings, offers immense tourism potential.

How Wedding Tourism Fits into India’s Economic Landscape

Wedding tourism is set to play a key role in building India’s $1 trillion economy, according to the Minister. India’s tourism sector currently contributes 7% to the nation’s GDP and accounts for 10-12% of total employment. However, the potential of wedding tourism extends far beyond its current reach, with the Minister noting that unorganized sectors—such as smaller, non-registered venues—often go unaccounted for in tourism statistics. Just as the country sees millions of domestic pilgrims travelling to religious destinations each week, wedding-related tourism is thriving on a much larger scale than official figures suggest.

The Hon’ble Minister proposed that India’s wedding infrastructure, which is currently utilized for only 70-75 days during the wedding season, could be maximized year-round for other events and celebrations. By doing so, India can not only boost wedding tourism but also broaden its scope to include a wide array of events, thereby multiplying the economic benefits.

Government Initiatives to Bolster Wedding Tourism

Dr. Ranjeet Mehta, CEO & Secretary General, PHDCCI said, initiatives by the government of India, such as streamlining the visa process have led to a significant increase in tourism last year, driven by improved accessibility and infrastructure development in the country. Places like Rajasthan are already on the list of top wedding destinations. India’s rich heritage, culture, and diverse states make it an attractive destination for tourism. With the active participation of the people, we look forward to suggestions, the government’s focus, and the increased importance placed on wedding tourism in the country, added Dr. Mehta.

The government has also partnered with various state tourism boards, such as Gujarat Tourism, Madhya Pradesh Tourism, and Uttar Pradesh Tourism, to further develop wedding tourism. Additionally, significant investments are being made to improve accessibility, infrastructure, and promotion, ensuring that India remains an attractive option for both domestic and international wedding events.

The Untapped Potential of Destination Weddings

Destination weddings have become a global trend, offering couples the chance to combine tourism with their celebrations. India, with its grand palaces, scenic landscapes, and cultural diversity, is perfectly positioned to become a leading global destination for weddings. Shri Hemant Jain highlighted the rising demand for luxury weddings in India, noting that the global wedding industry is valued at $300 billion, with India’s share standing at $50 billion. As destination weddings continue to gain popularity, this sector is likely to see further expansion, driving growth in aviation, hospitality, and related industries.

Wedding Tourism: A Catalyst for Inclusive Growth

Mr. Anil Parashar, Senior Member – Tourism & Hospitality Committee, PHDCCI discussed that India’s tourism industry is a key pillar of our economy. In 2023, India welcomed over 15 million foreign tourists, generating over $30 billion in foreign exchange earnings. Also, domestic tourism is thriving, with more than 1.8 billion domestic trips taken annually. This vibrant industry plays a significant role in promoting inclusive growth, as it touches the lives of people in both urban and rural areas.

The wedding industry is the fourth-largest industry in India, with an annual expenditure of $130 billion, according to a report by the Economist. This industry supports millions of jobs, ranging from planners and decorators to local artisans and service providers, ensuring that the economic benefits of wedding tourism are widely distributed.

Strategic Partnerships and Industry Contributions

Mr. Samit Garg, President, of the Event & Entertainment Management Association informed that EEMA’s commitment to developing India’s wedding tourism sector is demonstrated through our contributions to the Incredible India campaign, the comprehensive Wedding Tourism Strategy draft, and our active participation in the 1st PHDCCI Wedding Tourism Summit & Expo. It’s a powerful platform for aligning policy, industry practices, and innovation to unlock the true potential of this industry and establish India as a leading global destination for weddings.

The Future of Wedding Tourism in India

With the right policies, infrastructure, and promotional efforts, India is well on its way to becoming a global leader in wedding tourism. The PHDCCI Wedding Tourism Summit & Expo marks a significant step toward this goal, providing a collaborative platform for industry leaders, policymakers, and government officials to discuss the future of this lucrative sector.

As India continues to leverage its cultural and geographical advantages, the wedding industry will remain a key driver of the nation’s economic growth. Through strategic partnerships and government support, India can unlock the potential of wedding tourism and build a thriving $1 trillion economy, with wedding celebrations at its heart.
