Sikkim Tourism successfully concluded the Sikkim Rural Tourism Meet (SRTM) 2025, held from March 22–24 in the picturesque village of Uttarey, West Sikkim. The 3-day event was aimed at promoting rural and sustainable tourism, uplifting local enterprises, and showcasing Sikkim’s rich cultural heritage and culinary traditions.
Organised by the Department of Tourism and Civil Aviation, the event brought together a diverse group of tourism stakeholders, policymakers, travel trade professionals, and influencers from across the country. The initiative focused on fostering collaboration, encouraging tourism investment, and strengthening the rural tourism ecosystem in the region.

Guests were accommodated in various homestays, allowing them to experience Sikkimese hospitality and immerse themselves in local culture and cuisine. The event was inaugurated with great enthusiasm by Hon’ble Minister for Tourism, Civil Aviation and Commerce & Industries, Mr. Tshering Thendup Bhutia, alongside senior officials from multiple government departments.
The opening day featured a B2B networking session, providing a platform for local homestay owners, travel agents, and tourism service providers to explore partnerships and investment avenues. The venue came alive with traditional Sikkimese folk dances, musical performances, and cultural showcases, offering visitors an authentic and engaging experience.

Stalls set up by local artisans, farmers, and entrepreneurs displayed the best of Sikkimese handicrafts, handloom products, and organic food items, reflecting the state’s commitment to self-reliant rural tourism.
Speaking on the occasion, Minister T.T. Bhutia welcomed the delegates and expressed gratitude for their participation. He emphasized that Sikkim’s scenic beauty, cultural richness, and warm hospitality not only draw tourists but also provide tangible benefits to local communities. He underlined the state’s focus on homestays, eco-tourism, and adventure tourism as pillars of a sustainable tourism model that respects and preserves the state’s unique identity.

Principal Secretary Mr. C.S. Rao noted that over 60 tourism professionals from across India participated in the meeting. He thanked both national and local stakeholders for their support and remarked on the growing popularity of rural tourism and homestay experiences among travellers seeking authenticity.
Mr. Neeraj Pradhan, PEC-cum-Nodal Officer of Sikkim INSPIRES, addressed the gathering and shared the government’s strategic vision to elevate rural tourism. He discussed plans, including the development of adventure sports, enhancement of tourist amenities, and measures to improve the overall visitor experience.

Adventure tourism took centre stage at the event, with activities such as trekking to the Phoktey Dara viewpoint, bird-watching, paragliding, and hot air balloon rides drawing enthusiastic participation. The evenings came alive with cultural performances, including a mesmerising musical evening by Sofiyum, a renowned Lepcha rock band, which was a highlight of the event.
The SRTM 2025 is aligned with national initiatives such as ‘Dekho Apna Desh’ and Rural Tourism Cluster Development, spotlighting lesser-known destinations and integrating them into mainstream travel itineraries to promote inclusive and sustainable tourism growth.
