There’s something magical about the Indian monsoon that words often fail to capture. Monsoon in India is not just a season, but it’s a feeling from the scent of wet earth and dramatic skies to the rhythmic sound of rain. A season that breathes life into nature and stirs the soul. This article explores India’s most magical destinations during the rains, with tips, cultural references, and everything you need to travel smartly through the season. From Munnar, Kerala’s tea gardens and waterfalls, to Udaipur, Rajasthan’s lakes and palaces, travelers get an unforgettable experience of monsoons in India. Whether you’re seeking serene landscapes, cultural festivals, or offbeat destinations, the rainy season promises memories that last a lifetime. Here are a few places you must visit in India during the rainy season (June –September)
Munnar, Kerala

One of my top monsoon recommendations is Munnar, a hill station in Kerala, which looks enchanting during the rains as the monsoon enhances its beauty, which seems to be perfect for a getaway or a nature treat. It’s more famous for tea gardens, waterfalls, and cloud-laced valleys. The best time to visit is mid-July to August, and your ideal stay for enjoying the time the most is at the properties of Rainforest Resorts or tea estate bungalows. While being there and enjoying your getaways, you can also get familiar with their festivals, like Onam, a harvest festival that includes boat racing, traditional dancing, feasts, and colorful decorations.
Coorg, Karnataka

Not far from here, you’ll find Coorg, Karnataka, which is also known as the “Scotland of India.” Coorg’s coffee plantations and rolling hills are the most surreal views of greenery during monsoon. The pouring down of waterfalls adds a mist in nature. The best time to visit is from June to August. Your ideal stay can be in plantation stays or cozy hilltop cottages.
Goa

Goa will be a surprise during the monsoon, but while we all are familiar that Goa is famous for its beaches in the summers and winters, have you ever visited Goa during the rains? It looks magnificent during the rain. It offers a different charm: quieter beaches, dramatic seascapes, lush hinterlands, and off-season discounts. To enjoy the cool breeze flowing, you will love the ideal stay at Boutique Stays or Rustic Beach Shacks. The Sao João and Chikal Kalo festivals are the highlights during the monsoon season. You’ll be able to witness the festival, which showcases the remarkable monsoon tradition of their region.
Valley of Flowers, Uttarakhand

If you’re craving a trek, head to the Valley of Flowers in Uttarakhand, where hundreds of species of wildflowers of every color burst into bloom, especially during the rainy season in Uttarakhand, which can assure nature lovers that their trek will be breathtaking. The Valley of Flowers is also known as “Foolo ki Ghati” (Valley of Flowers). In my personal experience, the best time to visit is from mid-July to August to have the best trek of your life. Your ideal stay could be at the guesthouse in Ghangaria or the campsites to have the most surreal experience.
Udaipur, Rajasthan
And then there’s Udaipur, Rajasthan’s city of lakes, which looks more beautiful than in the monsoon season. As the rain splashes in the lake, it brings the city’s palaces and gardens back to life. The relief from Rajasthan’s humid and hot weather and rain makes the palaces in the city look magically serene while reflecting the cloudy skies. Your best time to visit is from July to early September. You can have the time of your life by staying in the perfect stays, like the Heritage hotels by the lake, which give the best view of the city. The festival you’ll be able to witness during the monsoon is Teej, to enjoy marital harmony. Locals celebrate these festivals to mark the arrival of the monsoon.
Mumbai, India

And last but not least, Mumbai, as the “Bombay rains are to die for,” you heard the phrase too, right? With the first drop of rain on Mumbai’s streets and sitting on Marine Drive watching the rain while having hot tea, the city undergoes a dramatic transformation. Love it or hate it, Mumbai’s monsoon is an experience that stirs every sense—raging seas, neon-lit streets reflecting puddles, and the aroma of street food mixing in the wet soil air make for an exceptional experience. The monsoon months see artisans crafting massive Ganesha idols (an Indian god), while the actual festival falls around August-September. The ideal stay will be at the iconic Taj Hotel.
As for food—oh, the food! India during monsoon is incomplete without piping hot pakoras, crispy fritters made of vegetables or paneer, accompanied by masala chai or the bhutta, also known as grilled corn with lemon and masala, and last but not least, od thalis. In regions like Goa, Kerala, and Maharashtra, the tastiest seafood is served in thalis, including rice, roti, and various curries.
Of course, there are some things to keep in mind while traveling in India during monsoons. Make sure you have travel insurance, as it’s a wise choice. Always be updated about the weather conditions before heading to hilly regions prone to landslides. Also, carry your luggage lightly but smartly. A few recommendations you can follow to have the greatest and safest time of your life are to carry waterproof jackets, plastic bags, and pouches to keep your electronic devices safe during the rain. But the experiences that awaken the senses and renew the soul are a must-visit!! You can unlock the unique beauty of traveling in the rain by skipping the crowds, following the clouds, and letting India’s rainy season lead you on an unforgettable journey.
