Jazeera Airways: Reducing Environmental Impact By Using 100% Biodegradable Alternatives

Jazeera Airway Going Green With Pioneering Efforts

In a remarkable move towards environmental responsibility, Jazeera Airways, Kuwait’s leading low-cost carrier, has taken significant steps to reduce its in-flight single-use plastic consumption. This initiative is not only groundbreaking but also sets a noteworthy example for the entire aviation industry.

A Greener Approach to In-Flight Dining

Jazeera Airways has recently introduced sustainable food service ware on all its flights, spanning an extensive network of 64 destinations. The airline’s transition from plastic cutlery to 100% biodegradable alternatives, including spoons, forks, knives, and napkins, is making a remarkable impact. By implementing this change, Jazeera Airways successfully reduces an impressive 300 kilograms of plastic waste on its flights each month.

The biodegradable cutlery used by Jazeera Airways is manufactured by Palmade®, a Dubai-based company known for its commitment to sustainability. These eco-friendly utensils are crafted from natural materials, including date palm tree leaves, and are certified as both biodegradable and compostable. Furthermore, Jazeera Airways has also switched from plastic stirrers to wooden ones, further demonstrating its dedication to sustainable practices.

Setting a Regional Precedent

Jazeera Airways has become the first low-cost carrier in the Middle East to make the transition from plastic to eco-friendly food service ware in flight. This pioneering move showcases the airline’s commitment to environmental stewardship while maintaining its cost-conscious approach.

Rohit Ramachandran, the Chief Executive Officer of Jazeera Airways

Rohit Ramachandran, the Chief Executive Officer of Jazeera Airways, emphasizes the airline’s dual focus on cost-effectiveness and environmental responsibility. He states, “As a low-cost carrier, we must be mindful of our business’s financial aspects, but we are equally committed to our ethical, social, and environmental responsibilities. Over the past few years, we have taken gradual steps towards sustainability, and we remain dedicated to reducing our carbon footprint. Transitioning to biodegradable serviceware is another step in this journey, and we hope it will contribute to a more significant impact. Our ultimate goal is to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050.”

Investing in Green Aviation

In 2021, Jazeera Airways made a substantial investment exceeding US$3.4 billion by placing an order for 28 new A320neo and A321neo aircraft. These new additions to their fleet come with significant environmental benefits, including an 18% reduction in fuel consumption and CO2 emissions, as well as a 50% decrease in NOx emissions and noise pollution. This investment underscores Jazeera Airways’ commitment to reducing its environmental footprint and improving its overall sustainability.

Empowering Passengers: CHOOOSE™ Carbon Offset Program

To engage its passengers in the fight against climate change, Jazeera Airways runs the CHOOOSE™ carbon offset program. This initiative provides passengers with the option to reduce the environmental impact of their flights by contributing to climate projects. By participating in this program, travellers can actively support Jazeera Airways’ commitment to sustainability and carbon reduction.

Innovative Seating Solutions

Jazeera Airways has also made strides in enhancing fuel efficiency and reducing its environmental impact by investing in innovative seating solutions. The airline has acquired over 2,000 units of the new Expliseat TiSeat E2 model, which is renowned as the world’s lightest aircraft seat. These seats are set to be introduced across Jazeera Airways’ aircraft starting in 2024.

The Expliseat lightweight seats will offer multiple benefits, including a substantial weight reduction of 1.2 metric tons per aircraft. This reduction will lead to decreased jet fuel consumption and increased passenger capacity, further aligning Jazeera Airways with its sustainability objectives.
