On 21st June 2024, the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India organized a grand celebration of the International Day of Yoga at the iconic Qutub Minar Complex in New Delhi. The event, held at the Sun Dial Lawns, spanned from 07:00 AM to 08:00 AM and embraced the theme “Yoga for Self and Society / योग – स्वयं और समाज के लिए”.

A Grand Event at a Historical Landmark

The picturesque backdrop of the Qutub Minar, a UNESCO World Heritage site, provided a serene and inspiring setting for the mass Yoga session. The event drew a diverse group of participants, including senior government officials, tourism stakeholders, students, and locals, all unified in the spirit of promoting health and wellness through Yoga.

Shri Gajendra Singh Sekhawat, Hon’ble Minister of Tourism & Culture participated in the event as chief guest. He addressed participants and media regarding the importance of Yoga in the daily lives of individuals and society. Smt. V. Vidyavathi, Secretary (Tourism), and other senior officials of the Ministry of Tourism were also present during the event. The event was organized successfully in a grand manner in coordination with various agencies.

Yoga Demonstration by Experts

Shri Gopal Rishi, a renowned Yoga expert, led the practical Yoga session, demonstrating various Yoga postures and techniques. The session catered to individuals of all ages and abilities, making Yoga accessible and enjoyable for everyone.

Broad Participation from Various Sectors

Stakeholders from the travel trade and tourism industry, students from Yuva Tourism Clubs, specially-abled children, and officials from the Ministry of Tourism were among the many who took part in the Yoga session. Expansion to Prominent Tourist Destinations

In addition to the main event in New Delhi, the Ministry of Tourism organized Yoga sessions at several prominent tourist destinations in the Northern Region of India. These locations included:

  • Agra, Varanasi, and Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh
  • Jaipur and Jodhpur in Rajasthan
  • Chamkaur Sahib in Punjab
  • Forest Research Institute and Doon Sanskriti School (Tribal) in Dehradun, Uttarakhand
  • Chandigarh
  • Shimla in Himachal Pradesh
  • Srinagar in Jammu & Kashmir
  • Ladakh

Each of these locations, renowned for its historical and cultural significance, provided unique and picturesque settings for Yoga enthusiasts to connect with nature and heritage while practising Yoga.

Star-classified hotels under the Ministry of Tourism’s classification system also joined in the celebrations by organizing Yoga sessions within their premises. This initiative not only highlighted the importance of Yoga for wellness but also reinforced India’s position as a premier wellness tourism destination.
