Addressing Hospitality Industry Concerns: HRAWI’s Engagement with Top Political Leaders
The Hotel And Restaurant Association of Western India (HRAWI), Aurangabad Chapter, recently convened a significant meeting with key political figures in Maharashtra. This gathering aimed to address the pressing issues within the hospitality industry and seek viable solutions for its sustainable growth and development.
Engagement with Political Leaders
Mr Harpreet Singh Nirh, President of Aurangabad Hotels & Restaurants Association, engaged in discussions and proposed recommendations for improvement with the BJP-Sena Mahayuti candidate, along with Hon’ble CM – Shri Eknath Shinde, State Minister – Shri Atul Save, Union Minister – Shri B Karad, among other MLAs. Subsequently, another meeting was held with the Shiv Sena-INDIA candidate, joined by the Leader of the Opposition party, Mr Ambadas Danve. Mr Nirh is also expected to meet with Shri Satish Chavan of the NCP and Shri Prithviraj Chavan of the Congress to present the current status of the industry and outline expectations for its progress.
Pressing Concerns: Non-implementation of Industry Status
One of the primary concerns highlighted by HRAWI is the non-implementation of Industry Status for the hospitality sector. Despite being granted industry status in April 2021, the benefits associated with this designation have not been realized. As a result, hotels and restaurants continue to face commercial utility rates for electricity, water tax, and other essential services. Delays in issuing approval and eligibility certificates under the Tourism Policy 2016 further exacerbate financial burdens on businesses within the sector.
Impact on Hospitality Sector
The hospitality industry serves as a significant contributor to Maharashtra’s tourism GDP, providing employment opportunities and generating foreign exchange for the state. However, challenges such as high capital expenditures, elitist perceptions, expensive funding, and a lack of support from relevant authorities hinder its growth potential.
Challenges in Aurangabad
Aurangabad, renowned for its historical and cultural significance, grapples with poor connectivity, hindering its potential as a tourist destination. Additionally, navigating the regulatory landscape poses significant challenges for businesses in the hospitality sector. Skill development initiatives are essential to enhancing employment opportunities and ensuring the industry’s sustainability.
Collaborative Efforts for Tourism Development
“HRAWI has always worked inclusively with Governments to enhance the tourism landscape in the State. Our collective goal is to position Maharashtra as a leading tourism destination. With its abundant tourism potential, the State can evolve into one of the best destinations globally. Our engagements with the contesting candidates are aimed at putting Maharashtra on the global map of top tourism destinations,” concludes Mr Shetty.
In conclusion, the engagement between HRAWI and top political leaders underscores the importance of addressing the concerns plaguing the hospitality industry. Through collaborative efforts and proactive measures, Maharashtra can unlock its full tourism potential and emerge as a premier destination on the global stage.
