ochi: The performances that enthralled music buffs in Kochi over the past two weekends came to a close, leaving the audience at the Bastian Bungalow in Fort Kochi asking for an encore. Organised over the past two weekends, the Classical Heritage Series saw music recitals from renowned classical music exponents and folk arts performances.
The Classical Heritage Series organized by the Union Ministry of Tourism in association with SPIC MACAY witnessed performances by Ustad Shujaat Khan (Sitar), Vidushi Shubha Mudgal (Hindustani Vocal), Kadari Gopalnath (Saxophone), Begum Parween Sultana (Hindustani Vocal), Ranjit Gogoi and team (Bihu), Warsi Brothers (Qawwali), Aao Naga Choir from Nagaland, and Theyyam from Kerala. Kerala has always been in the forefront in bringing to its shores art, music and dance festivals. The Classical Heritage Series has proved to be of much help in opening up the potential of Kerala Tourism to other parts of the country.
The weekend programme was part of the Union Tourism Ministry’s initiative to promote tourism at heritage sites. With a stress on the concept of “Tourism for All”, the programme had included Kochi as one of the venues for the programme aimed at celebrating a right mix of vocal and instrumental music and folk music and dances from various parts of the country. The other two venues were Varanasi and Delhi.
By being one the venues for the Classical Heritage Series music and dance performances, Kerala has established itself as a region where art and tourism go hand in hand. The Bastian Bungalow in Fort Kochi has been a preferred venue for art performances, and Kerala Tourism considers it a pride to be part of the renowned weekend programme organised jointly by the Union Ministry of Tourism and SPIC MACAY”. The Union Tourism Ministry joined hands with SPIC MACAY, a non-profit voluntary movement that has been functioning for 40 years for last 40 years, towards preserving the rich and diverse cultural heritage.
