Air India and Airbus Brings in A350’s, A320Neo, A321Neo, B787 Dreamliners, B777X and 737 Max
Air India, the globally renowned airline owned by Tata Group, has taken a significant stride in its $70 billion fleet expansion program by signing purchase agreements with Airbus and Boeing. This move further solidifies Air India’s commitment to growth and marks a milestone in its pursuit of becoming a leading player in the aviation industry. The purchase agreements were formalized during the ongoing Paris Air Show, underlining Air India’s dedication to modernizing its fleet.
Expanding the Fleet with Leading Manufacturers
Air India’s firm orders include a remarkable lineup of aircraft. The airline will acquire 34 A350-1000 and six A350-900 models from Airbus, along with 20 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 10 Boeing 777X widebody aircraft. In addition, Air India will introduce 140 Airbus A320neo, 70 Airbus A321neo, and 190 Boeing 737MAX narrowbody aircraft into its fleet. These cutting-edge aircraft will enhance Air India’s operational efficiency and elevate its passenger experience.
A Positive Outlook for Long-Term Growth
N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Sons and Air India, expressed his optimism about this significant development, stating, “This landmark step further positions Air India for long-term growth and success that, we have every hope, will come together to represent the best of modern aviation to the world.” With this ambitious fleet expansion program, Air India aims to assert its presence on the global stage and showcase India’s confidence in the aviation sector.
Campbell Wilson, CEO & MD of Air India, emphasized the airline’s commitment to fleet renewal and expansion, highlighting the goal of operating the most advanced and fuel-efficient aircraft across its route network within the next five years. He added, “We are proud to be working with all our partners in this journey to rebuild a global airline which reflects India taking a more confident posture around the world.”
Strong Partnerships for Comprehensive Support
To ensure seamless operations and maintenance, Air India will receive extensive support from Satair, an Airbus company, and Boeing Global Services. These partners will provide a wide range of solutions, including parts and maintenance provisioning, digital applications, and modification services. By collaborating with industry-leading service providers, Air India aims to optimize its operational efficiency and deliver exceptional services to its passengers.
Delivery Timeline and Accelerated Expansion
The Airbus A350, a state-of-the-art aircraft, will be the first to be delivered later this year, followed by a substantial number of orders from mid-2025 onwards. Furthermore, Air India has already commenced the delivery of 11 leased B777 and 25 A320 aircraft, which will significantly expedite its fleet and network expansion. This proactive approach showcases Air India’s commitment to rapid growth and strengthening its position in the market.

Christian Scherer, Chief Commercial Officer and Head of International at Airbus expressed his enthusiasm for being a key partner in Air India’s transformation, stating, “We are excited to be a key partner in the reinvention of the Flying Maharaja. We are proud that the efficiencies, comfort, and range capability offered by our latest-generation aircraft will contribute to the process, as Air India reclaims its rightful position as a world-class premium carrier.”
Similarly, Stan Deal, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes emphasized the fuel-efficient nature of the aircraft selection, stating, “The fuel-efficient mix of next-generation airplanes including the 737 MAX, 787 Dreamliner, and 777X will sustainably power Air India’s future fleet in the world’s fastest-growing commercial aviation market.”
