Umm al Jimal is the third Nabataean city after Petra and Um er-Rasas to make it to the list; Seventh to be inscribed from the country
Umm al-Jimal has been officially inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List, marking it as the seventh site from Jordan to receive this prestigious recognition. The announcement was made during the 46th session of the World Heritage Committee held in India. This ancient city joins Petra and Um er-Rasas as the third Nabataean city to earn this honor.
The UNESCO listing recognises Umm al-Jimal for its exceptional universal value, as highlighted in Jordan’s 2022 submission. The site meets the criteria for integrity, authenticity, and possesses a robust protection and management system to ensure its preservation.
Makram Al-Queisi, Jordan’s Minister of Tourism and Antiquities, expressed his pride, stating, “Today we celebrate the inclusion of Umm al-Jimal on the UNESCO World Heritage List, but we also celebrate the strong relationship between the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan and your esteemed organisation, which has lasted for decades.” He emphasized the site’s significance as a testament to the Nabataeans’ resilience and innovation, particularly in water management.
This achievement reflects the collaborative efforts of Jordan’s Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities, Umm al-Jimal Municipality, and the Department of Antiquities. Al-Queisi, along with Dr. Fadi Bal’awi, Director of the Department of Antiquities, and Hassan Rahiba, Mayor of Umm al-Jimal, received congratulations from international delegates, underscoring Jordan’s commitment to preserving its rich cultural heritage.
This recognition is just the beginning of Jordan’s ongoing efforts to inscribe more sites of exceptional universal value on the UNESCO World Heritage List.
